What is a Mini Session?

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

If you're on social media AT ALL these days, you have probably seen pop up ads from photographers about "Mini Sessions". Some of you may have an idea of what they are but some of you may be missing out on a GREAT opportunity simply because you have no idea. So, let me help you out!

A Mini Session usually consists of the following:

  • 30 minutes or less (depending on the photographer)

  • Pre designated location

  • Reduced cost

  • All inclusive fee

  • Online gallery + portrait selection

Why choose a Mini Session?

Mini sessions are great for a few reasons. Maybe you did a full session within the last year or so and you're just looking to do a quick update for the family portrait. Or, maybe your budget is tight right now. Although your package typically comes with 10 or fewer images, you can still put together a beautiful wall collage with 5, 7 or 10 portraits.

I've also found that sometimes a shorter session is more ideal for some children. Some little ones start to fizzle out after 30 minutes and respond better to a mini session. Every child is different, but, this is definitely something to consider when scheduling. Also, if you're schedule is busy, you have the added convenience of selecting your portraits from an online gallery and no need for a portrait selection appointment.

What are the draw backs?

Mini sessions are just that, they're "mini". You typically won't have access to the full services provided by your photographer like choosing your own location, planning meetings, portrait selection appointments etc. Also, if you're the type of person who is always running late...YIKES, a mini session might not be for you! haha Mini's are very time sensitive since there are other clients meeting with the photographer that day. We usually schedule a small buffer in between appointments but it's usually only 10 minutes or less.

Mini session fees are due at the time of scheduling and are non-refundable. There is good reason for this. Since they are such a good rate and there's limited appointments, they're in HIGH demand. If you were to schedule and then "no show", this takes time from the photographer and any potential customer who would have used the appointment. Payment is due at scheduling to show that you're committed to your time slot. Most of us offer the opportunity to reschedule when sufficient notice is provided but be sure you understand the terms and conditions in your contract.

Why do I LOVE Mini's?

I love mini's for a lot of reasons but, most importantly, I think every family should have beautiful portraits. That's why I offer mini sessions. I know the value of having beautiful, professional family portraits framed and on the wall. They are truly a treasure. Plus, mini's are a great way for moms to get even the most resistant family members to do a shoot! Once they see how easy it can be, maybe next time they'll be more cooperative! haha
